In September 2006, a band by the name of Seven opened for the up-and-coming
Karnivool at the sweaty, sweltering Ruby's Lounge, east of Melbourne. Seven
never had a particularly lasting impact on Australia's music scene in their
careers, but even now, two years later, I can vividly remember the sheer
electricity they generated on that Belgrave stage.

I wasted no time plonking down my $10 to buy their EP Escape Sequence, expecting
that when I got it home and played it, the CD would literally pop out of my
stereo from the amounts of energy contained on that little piece of plastic.

Instead, what I heard was limp and lifeless; the kineticism of their live show
had entirely failed to translate onto the recorded medium.

For bands that spend great lengths of time developing their live chops, it can
be difficult to make the transition to CD. Melbourne's Rook were one such band,
once.

As good as the songs on their latest release (Transitions) were, that EP
couldn't hold a candle to the religious experience their concerts could inspire.
For a band on the heavier end of the spectrum, as Rook are, bringing that style
of music to life can be far more difficult than it is for an acoustic or indie
rock band, and the better you are as a live outfit, the harder it is for you to
capture that in the recording process.

As it happened, Rook commanded one of Melbourne's most loyal fan bases due in
large part to their ability to rip up a stage with the best, and that's
precisely what Transitions would forever be unable to convey.

Its lacklustre production didn't help much, so it's a good thing Rook got Shihad
drummer Tom Larkin and uber-producer Forrester "the fourth/fifth/sixth member of
every band in Australia" Savell involved this time around. While no release will
ever completely encapsulate the feeling of a Rook gig, Add Colour comes pretty
damn close.

(Ironically, it was Savell who produced, mastered and engineered Seven's
afore-mentioned Escape Sequence. I guess he's changed his style a lot since
then.)

With only five songs in the barely 20-minute long collection, the band have
chosen the songs that provide the most bang for buck, and there isn't a low
point on the EP.

But that doesn't necessarily mean they've gone for an all-out heaviness assault.
As the title suggests, each and every song is luciously painted with a brilliant
array of colours, moods and emotions. The EP reflects the diverse range of
influences that combine to produce the signature Rook sound: grunge, dub, reggae
and world music receive equal representation among the good old Australian heavy
alternative rock that forms their foundation.

Larkin's influence is especially evident in the use of delay effects and vocal
harmonies, something not as extensively employed on Transitions or the much
earlier Paper Street EP.

As a whole, Add Colour takes the sound that Rook have built a reputation on, and
hauls it to the next level. The Bushido/.hinge-style progressive rock that has
defined them in the past is still there (.hinge's Glenn Johnstone makes a guest
appearance on "27 Seconds"), but they've added life, lustre, and above all,
colour.

Ironically, with all the studio bells and whistles, it might end up being
difficult for them to do it justice in a live setting.

Hailing from Vancouver, British Columbia, Hot Hot Heat first came to prominence
in 2002 with their breakthrough debut LP, Make Up The Breakdown, an electrifying
dose of urgent, dancey rock anchored by frontman Steve Bays characteristic yelp
and highly infectious melodies. Over the years, the Canadian band has delivered
their kinetic brand of rock and roll live to thousands, toured the world with
bands such as Modest Mouse, Kings Of Leon, The Walkmen and Queens of the Stone
Age, and released several albums, garnering praise from everyone from Pitchfork
to Rolling Stone and Spin who described their sound as aggressively exuberant
funk-punk.

The band s latest album Future Breeds is a call to action. After leaving their
previous label, the foursome stripped away all the unnecessary elements in their
lives, built their own studio in Vancouver, and emerged renewed and recharged.
The resulting record is at once propulsive and volcanic, and fueled, as ever, by
candy-coated melodies that hurl you through Bays' lyrical world.

Release notes:

Atlantic recording group Stone Temple Pilots has announced the upcoming release
of their hugely anticipated new album. 'STONE TEMPLE PILOTS' - the Grammy
Award-winning band's first all-new collection in close to a decade - will arrive
in stores and at all online retailers around the globe on May 25th. Produced by
Stone Temple Pilots and mixed by Chris Lord-Alge (Green Day, Dave Matthews Band,
My Chemical Romance), 'STONE TEMPLE PILOTS' sees one of rock's biggest bands
continuing to explore their enduring approach to music - melding big rock riffs,
classic pop hooks, and the restless experimentalism of glam, punk, and
psychedelia. Stone Temple Pilots - Scott Weiland, Dean DeLeo, Robert DeLeo, and
Eric Kretz - will introduce fans to the new album at their first live date of
2010, performing as part of the annual South By Southwest (SXSW) Music Festival
in Austin, Texas. The show - slated for Thursday, March 18th at the famed Austin
Music Hall, and presented by StubHub, the world's largest ticket marketplace -
kicks off an extensive worldwide 2010 schedule for STP, with U.S. dates, radio
festivals, and a European tour slated to follow. A full-scale North American
summer tour will also be announced in the coming weeks.

The Art of Chaos sound is "alternative" in the truest sense of the word.
Vocalist Brian Torres describes the sound best. "It's anthemic alt rock meets
lyrical confessional pop. There are a lot of electronic textures, and the sound
is often very lush. I want to bring atmospheric ambience to that melodic space.
It's a fusion of ethereal elements with mainstream rock."

Spending the holidays in the studio is nothing new for New Jersey/Philadelphia
rockers DIVE. The winter of 2009, however, was different. Perhaps it was working
with multi-platinum producer Jim Wirt (Incubus, Hoobastank, Live, No Doubt). Or
maybe it was recording at the legendary 4th Street Recording Studios in Santa
Monica, CA, where the hum of the Beach Boys melodies still linger in the place
that gave birth to their sound decades earlier. Regardless of the inspirational
source, DIVE returned home bearing the finest Christmas gift of all: an album of
its most accomplished music to date along with the excitement for what 2010 will
hold.

DIVE is a group comprised of singer/songwriter Jon Sitar, guitarists Jeff
Moczydlowski and Evan Canova, bassist Mike Morgan and drummer Zhach Kelsch. The
band takes great pride in its performances, routinely delivering a tight and
energetic live show. This energy is on full display on the band s debut album
titled Picture Perfect, which is set to be released in mid-May by Phase
One/MadRock Records. The new album marks the band s first on the New York-based
label. DIVE has already built a devoted fan base thanks to the support of 93.3
WMMR (Philadelphia), the first radio station to feature DIVE in full-rotation,
and by sharing the stage with international acts such as Three Days Grace,
Hinder, Eve 6, Filter, SafetySuit, Halestorm, The Ataris, Rev Theory,
Silvertide, TRUSTcompany, Days of the New, RED, Duff McKagan's Loaded and Sum
41.

As they kick the sand off their Converse, the guys now prepare to deliver their
unique brand of aggressive/melodic rock to a mainstream audience across the
country. So keep an eye on DIVE as they head out on the road to promote their
new release in your city.

Hailing from Lake Mary, Florida, the members of It's Alive are all still in
their early 20s, but they sound like nothing short of rock veterans on their
debut album Human Resources. Human Resources boasts the camaraderie of four
like-minded musicians on a mission. The first single, "Pieces," offers a taste
of their vision, a heavy rock and roll bottom provided by the rhythm section of
bassist Juice Dean and drummer Eddie Matta that gives way to lush melodies,
characterized by Zach Webb's full-throated, emotional vocals and Clay Haywood's
anthemic riffs. Opening track "The Bottom" is a thudding, intense number that
sets the tone for the rest of the album, an intense and driven twelve tracks
with prog-rock leanings on tracks like "Selfless" and "Back to the Rain".

a little bit late, but still hot!!!

Well we finally have the new THE LOVECRAVE album here. RockEyez named their 2006
The Angel And The Rain CD in the top ten releases of that year and we have been
waiting for a new release to hit the shelves.

Ah the sweet, sensational voice of Francesca Chiara sends shivers down my spine;
not only is she sexy as hell but talented beyond belief.

The opening track ôThe Other Youö begins with narration as industrial style
keyboards enter the picture and the sensual vocals of Francesca take center
stage. The song is classic and masterful with a killer chorus that will have you
chatting for days. Unbelievable!!!!

I love the whispering vocals of Francesca as she brings each track to a climax.
The guitar by Tank is as roaring as a machine gunner taking control. THE
LOVECRAVE is like no other band you have ever heard with so many tools in their
artillery, from the masterful lyrics to outstanding musicianship.

From start to finish THE LOVECRAVE have hit the knockout punch on each track.
They also can bring sensitivity as with the song ôFadeö. Francesca has the vocal
essence of Stevie Nicks but with a little extra flair.

Check out the rocker ôGet Outta Hereö and tell me that it isnÆt a great song. It
has all the qualities of a #1 song and so do many of the other tracks. This is
just a phenomenal CD. Man, this track will pump you up and the chorus is
amazing.

IÆm really not a fan of cover tunes but when itÆs done with class and changes
the feel of a song like THE LOVECRAVE does with MICHAEL JACKSONÆs ôThrillerö
itÆs more than memorable. Actually itÆs not the vocals this time around that
make the grade itÆs the music from the midsection of Bob ôThe Machineö Parolin
on drums and the bass lines Simon Dredo that brings the tune to life.

ôYour Fireö changes direction a bit until The Tank gives a jolt of electricity.
I really love this track which has a CURE feel with the keyboards.

Tell me you wouldnÆt want to have Francesca sing you to sleep with the mellow
track öLeon's Lullabyö. She SHINES vocally on this one!!!!!

LetÆs change a bit and give some kick ass rock on this oneà ôTru Bloodö has
heavy mind-bending riffs by Tank and listen to Francesca rip on vocals. Fat,
furious and hard hitting, (Say Away, Stay Away) damn that LOVECRAVE; another
chorus of burnt memories. Tank goes off shredding hereà

You know I wonder sometimes why a band would leave a track like ôOutsiderö for
last. This is my favorite track on Soul Saliva. It is above sensational with the
keyboards mixing with phenomenal vocals and once again the writing ability of
THE LOVECRAVE is astonishing. This is like being on top of the mountain and
soaring to great heights. YOU GOTTA HERE THIS ONE as well as the rest of Soul
Saliva. PLEASE add this one to your collection for your own good!

6 Top Ten Singles with Over 4 MILLION Albums Sold - Tonic returns with their 4th
new album entitled, 'TONIC'

It s been almost two years since their last project, the Grammy nominated 'Head
on Straight' and the band have returned reenergized with a collection of eleven
new songs. Each member adds a variety of musical contributions to the mix
Emerson Hart provides lead vocals, acoustic guitars and keyboards; Jeff Russo
plays lead electric, acoustic and rhythm guitars, keyboards, piano, lap steel,
percussion and lends background vocals; Dan Lavery works the bass guitar, piano,
acoustic guitar, harmonizes and sings background vocals. Produced by Tonic and
Nathaniel Kunkel, 'TONIC' is redolent of their trademark honest, powerful,
melodic rock sound.

Tonic have been on a whirlwind ride since their debut in 1998 when they earned
the distinction of having released the #1 most-played rock song of the year.
Since that auspicious debut, the band have sold millions, won numerous awards
and Grammy nominations and developed a huge worldwide fan base as they
tirelessly toured the world. All three members continue to bring a special
energy to Tonic as they have created music collectively as well as explored
other outlets both musical and otherwise (family life and fatherhood, being
particularly notable). With this band as their central focus, however, they
never present anything less than their best effort and 'TONIC' is a sincere
reflection of that.

Says Emerson Hart: 'When we play music together it feels like going home.
Getting together, playing some rock-n-roll, it s the best feeling in the world.'

From ôHotlantaö, Georgia, comes Dangerous New Machine and their first full
length titled Set The World On Fire. Featuring former Stereomud/Soundevice/Love
Said No frontman Erik Rogers, guitarist Billy Grey (ex-Fozzy/SickSpeed), bassist
Randy Reider and Rodney Beaubouef (ex-Stuck Mojo) on drums, the band definitely
has the talent to take the industry by storm. But so many years after those
bands achieved success, will we find out that Dangerous New Machine is more
smoke than fire?

Set The World On FireÆs first two tacks, ôShut Upö and ôBurnö, start the album
off like a sledgehammer to your cranium. Both tracks incorporate bouncy guitars
that are blanketed with punchy vocals, tons of groove and some seriously
contagious melodies. For those who are familiar with RogersÆ old band Stereomud,
donÆt expect Dangerous New Machine to be just another clone because theyÆre not.
This fearsome foursome also combine elements of Sevendust and even Nonpoint into
their ferocious Atl-metal mix.

ôLetÆs Talk About Sexö and ôFeel Alive Againö are a couple of songs that really
caught my ear. ôLetÆs Talk About Sexö (not to be confused with the Salt-N- Pepa
version) opens with Billy GreyÆs face ripping riffs alongside BeaubouefÆs
pounding skins and RogersÆ lighthearted lyrics. The track has an amazing stomp
at the end that will immediately get your head bobbing at a rapid pace. ôFeel
Alive AgainÆsö southern style intro leads directly into rapid fire Sevendust
style riffing and vocals that Lajon Witherspoon (Sevendust) would be proud of.
The choruses are big, melodic and memorable as hell.

With all the good songs on the album, there are a few that really didnÆt do
anything for me either. ôMy Sinsö sees the band fuse punk stylings alongside
their crunching, heavy rock grit. My problem doesnÆt lie within the verses as
much as it does with the sloppy choruses. The break in the action is filled with
guitar noises, bass lines and drum fills, all while Rogers sings throughout. l
found it a little agitating and felt it killed any drive that the song had. ôI
Wishö is very good song at its base level, but I would have loved to hear the
song purely acoustic rather than loaded up with keys, super poppy choruses and
halfhearted distortion. I totally understand why the song is structured the way
it is û commercial appeal. Like I said, itÆs not a bad song, itÆs just not my
cup of tea.

Although there were a couple of tracks that didnÆt catch my ear, Set The World
On Fire ends with some of the albumÆs best. ôWhatÆs Your Nameö is a rockinÆ
thumper that has lots of low end, tons of bounce and RogersÆ trademark raspy
vocals. My personal favorite, ôSkeletonsö, boasts big time grooves and super
catchy choruses that are among the discÆs heaviest and most memorable As a
bonus, Dangerous New Machine cover Salt-N-PepaÆs infamous 80Æs hit ôPush Itö.
IÆve never been a fan of cover songs at all, especially on a debut album. I have
always felt that cover songs tend to be a cheap attempt to make a quick splash
in the industry. Well, even with my absolute hatred for cover songs, I must
admit that the cover is a fresh and extremely fun listen. The band do a great
job at making the cover their own by adding loads of energy and aggression into
such a classic funky rap song.

Dangerous New MachineÆs Set The World On Fire is a solid debut for these never
say quit veterans. While there may be a few hiccups here and there, the album is
definitely filled with more good songs than bad, thatÆs for sure. They say
lightning never strikes the same place twice. Well, with Dangerous New Machine,
not only did it strike twice, but it started an inferno.

Four-piece metal band Anew Revolution is launching their latest metal assault on
your ears on May 18th, 2010 titled iMerica. Made up of Joey Duenas (Ex-Unloco
vocalist), Frank Salvaggio and Rob Urbani (former members of Slaves on Dope),
and Shaun Stockton on guitar, and these guys combine to bring the heat! Upon
doing a little research on the band, I found them listed as hard rock, nu metal,
rock, and alternative, but this album is just metal to my ears. In listening to
previous efforts by Anew Revolution, I realized that iMerica is definitely
harder and more aggressive than their past effort, and a good direction for the
band.

iMerica opens with ôBroken Bones,ö and itÆs got everything a metal fan could
want to hear. This song swings for the fences knocking a homerun out of the
park. Overdriven guitar riffs and knock-your-teeth-out percussive beats really
start the album off in a strong way. Not to mention Joey DuenasÆ vocals match
perfectly when laid on top of the music. This is a good time to point out that
the songs on the album are extremely catchy. There are many sections throughout
each song that will get stuck in your head having you singing along long after
the cd is over.

I would also like to point out that iMerica is extremely radio friendly. Some
metal fans may not want to hear that, but, I could definitely see many of the
tracks being played on any weekly rock countdown across the country. I could
hear them being played right behind Nonpoint, Sevendust, or any other band that
gets some hard rock radio love. If youÆre a radio station manager, get on this
record. STAT!

Okay, back to the album. ôHead Against the Wall,ö starts off with a slow
lead-in, then giving subtle hints that itÆs going to get hard, and boy, that it
does. This track will grab hold of you and shake any cobwebs out of your head
with its intensity and aggressiveness. This not only could be another single,
but possibly my favorite track.

This album is full of great guitar riffs that will shred your eardrums into
little bits and pieces (listen to ôSocial Suicideö for a great example.)
Actually, that reminds meàöSocial Suicideö is yet another great track with its
catchy melodies that definitely gets stuck in your head. But donÆt let that fool
you, because this song bleeds ôawesome.ö

This release is guaranteed to get Anew Revolution out there, and IÆm hopeful it
gets them some attention on the air-waves! I know I talked a lot about the
radio-friendliness of the album, and again, I know that can carry a negative
stigma with some metalheads. But, I assure you that IÆd rather hear songs from
iMerica on the radio, rather than some of the current bands being played today.
If youÆre a fan of metal or hard rock, then I would strongly suggest you give
this album a listen. Anew Revolution have released a very solid effort that they
should be very proud to release.

The ALL/DescendentsÆ guitarist extraordinaire Stephen Egerton has stepped out on
his own and produced what is sure to be considered one of the best pop punk
records of this decade. IÆd go so far as to put this album up against any of the
genres greats because it is that good. The mixture of StephenÆs excellent
songwriting, musicianship, and production and the variety of vocals make for an
exceptionally enjoyable listen.

Admittedly the standout tracks to me are those featuring the vocal talents of
Chad Price (ALL), Scott Reynolds (ALL), and Milo Aukerman (Descendents). Those
three songs (ôFunny Face,ö ôSunny Disposition,ö and ôSheÆs Got Everythingö)
sound like those new ALL/DescendentsÆ songs that fans like me have been dying to
hear. But truth be told, there isnÆt a bad song in the bunch (in fact they are
all really f-ing good).

While The Seven Degrees of Stephen Egerton may not be that new ALL/Descendents
record, itÆs darned close but itÆs also more. These are great pop songs that
should be played on radios all across the country. They are anthems for summer
that will make you feel happy and want to dance and should be staples in heavy
rotation on iPods and playlists around the country. This is not only a must have
for fans of pop punk, but it is an album that fans of great pop songs all over

'Prove It' the new album from the Expendables, four piece from Santa Cruz, CA
ushers in a large arena rock sound coupled with a laidback California groove
that issues new blood in an era littered with fashionable screaming emo bands,
American Idol rejects, novice 3 chord pop punk, and single note solo rip-offs.
The Expendables forge hessian rock, reggae, dub, punk, and fisting pumping dual
guitar riffs into a unique fusion that pushes the envelope musically with a
product as groovy as the funky northern California beach town they grew up in,
but also with the rock and metal explosion you might have encountered at an
early eighties Ozzy show at The Cow Palace.

This album is a large step up for the Expendables, both in production and song
writing, and stylistically reveals them transcending the boundaries of what some
might consider the California reggae rock genre. The bands constant touring,
social networking prowess, and grass roots marketing combined with a loyal fan
base, and presence through Stoopid Recods will make this album a highly

State Radio is an alternative rock band from Sherborn, Massachusetts, consisting
of Chad Urmston (lead vocals, guitar), Chuck Fay (bass) and Mike Najarian
(drums). The band's first full-length album, Us Against the Crown, was released
in December 2005, their second, Year of the Crow in September 2007, and their
most recent album, Let it Go, in September 2009.

A Boston based trio band led by singer and primary songwriter Chad Urmston (a
former member of Vermont jamsters Dispatch), State Radio largely managed to
avoid the usual post-Phish clichÚs, injecting a punk-influenced sound and
politically charged viewpoint while staying true to the tenets of the band's
chosen style, which infuses a blend of Roots-Reggae, Ska, Punk and Rock.

Urmston, who disbanded Dispatch at the height of its popularity in 2002, formed
State Radio later the same year. Focusing exclusively on guitar and vocals
instead of the instrument switching he was previously known for, he brought in
second guitarist Pete Halby, bassist Chuck Fay, and drummer Mike Greenfield to
round out the lineup. After the exploratory debut EP Flag of the Shiners was
released by Fenway Recordings in late 2002, State Radio went on a temporary
hiatus throughout 2003 as Urmston recovered from throat surgery. Returning to
active duty in 2004 as a slimmed-down trio with new drummer Brian Sayers, State
Radio followed a second EP, Simmer Kane, with the release of 2005's Us Against
the Crown. Another personnel change occurred before State Radio toured in
support of the album, with drummer Mike Najarian replacing Sayers.

The sophomore effort Year of the Crow followed in fall 2007, bringing with it an
emphasis on louder guitars and sociopolitical themes. State Radio reinforced
such themes by launching service projects in each city the band visited, and
Urmston briefly reconvened Dispatch for a three-night charity performance at
Madison Square Garden, with funds going toward Zimbabwe relief. State Radio
maintained such political awareness on 2009's Let It Go.

Official recording sessions for their third album began on November 3, 2008 in
North Brookfield, Massachusetts at Long View Farm Studios. The album, entitled
Let It Go, was released on September 29, 2009.

Following the release of "Let It Go" State Radio launched their winter tour. The
winter 2010 tour is titled "Lefty Rides Again" and will be visiting many cities
across the United States. State Radio will also be completing a small European
tour during the last two weeks of March.

Now they are releasing this Live At The Brattle Theatre 2 set acoustic cds, 29
live and acoustic tracks including State Radio rarities and newbies.

Enjoy!

A Loss for Words are a five-piece pop punk band from Boston, Massachusetts.
Having gained a good amount of attention from being associated with
Massachusetts brethren Four Year Strong, AL4W have followed in their steps by
creating a covers album. Motown Classics is A Loss for Words' first album for
Paper + Plastick Records and the follow-up to their debut The Kids Can't Lose.

How is it?

It's fun. A Loss for Words may not be as talented as some of their pop punk
peers, but they are certainly just as hardworking and passionate as any other
band out there. On this cover album, the band get a good selection of hits that
everyone should know by heart already, which makes for a few fun listens the
first times you hear the record. The lighthearted vocals and hook-laden guitar
parts show that A Loss for Words definitely know how to execute their style.
However, for the most part, this album drags on after a few listens. It's
generically enjoyable but it's repetitive and most listeners probably won't
return to Motown Classics save a few standout tracks. Choice cuts include "All
Night Long", "Do You Love Me", "My Girl", and "You Can't Hurry Love", but some
of the other tracks seem a bit filler-ish. On "I Want You Back", Alan Day and
Dan O'Connor of Four Year Strong are featured on vocals, nicely complementing A
Loss for Words' sound. "Do You Love Me" is my personal favorite, a short and
sweet number with a chorus that is easy to sing along to with your friends.

Summer has started, and if you're looking for a fun album or some car music,
look no further than this. A Loss for Words are as worthy of your dollar as any
other band out there. It's important to take this album for what it is and
nothing more; covers albums can come off as a disappointment to fans of a band,
but A Loss for Words have managed to put out a few fun songs that will be a
treat to hear live.

Danko Jones takes a lot of flak for the trend-averse sensibility that fuels his
unapologetic cock rock. But the Mango Kid (does anyone even call him that any
more?) is bound to have the last, Gene Simmonsûsized laugh as his riff-laden,
pop-inflected, high-energy jams are as catchy and punchy as ever on the trioÆs
fifth full-length, Below the Belt. ôMagic Snakeö is full of AC/DCûworthy
innuendo while ôFull of Regretö and ôI Think Bad Thoughtsö are decent anthems of
excess. Leaving the slightly psychedelic production of Never Too Loud behind,
however, robs BtB of dynamics and makes for little distinction among the 11
tracks. ôActive Volcanoes,ö on the other hand, offers the sort of Æ70s-sounding
cowbell rock that should play well with the KISS crowd.

ThereÆs a sentence in Dead Letter CircusÆ official bio that might just be the
first accurate thing a band has ever written about themselves, ôWatching someone
on their first listen to Brisbane alternative breakthroughs Dead Letter Circus
searching to come up with a neat description is fascinating viewing... ôItÆs
kind of like... no wait, itÆs more of a... Wow, I have no idea what it is, but
itÆs different...ö It describes the band perfectly, with their delay soaked
alternative rock drawing comparisons ranging from The Mars Volta to U2. For the
last couple of years with the help of a brilliant EP, thousands of very loyal
fans and more recently, a major label, DLC have become one of the more popular
bands in Australian rock. Thus with the release of their debut album there is
quite a large amount of expectation. Fans however, can rest easy, because the
album is killer.

Epic is a word thrown around all too frequently in reference to bands in this
genre, seemingly becoming just another genre name for bands with big vocals and
spaced out songs. However, on This is the Warning, Dead Letter Circus have
actually achieved the definition of epic. Coming across as a combination of The
Temper Trap, Karnivool and everything else in between, the band manage to
maintain an air of experimentation while still being inherently catchy. ThatÆs
essentially where This is the Warning succeeds as an album; it has a crossover
appeal that will appease music fans in general. This is particularly true on
songs such as the scintillating opener æHere We DivideÆ and the insanely catchy
æBig.Æ Both are songs that are reasonably straightforward in terms of structure,
but still manage to maintain interest over and over.

The bandÆs progression from their debut EP is apparent from the get go, both in
song writing and musicianship. Throughout This is the Warning there is a myriad
of extra sounds and instruments. This is particularly true for some of the more
experimental songs on the album, namely æThe DrumÆ and æThe Design.Æ Without
getting too far ahead of ourselves, æThe DrumÆ may just be the best thing DLC
has written. Featuring everything from industrial influences to Karnivool
inspired heaviness, æThe DrumÆ shows that Dead Letter Circus is not a æone trick
pony,Æ but is in fact capable of experimenting and, funnily enough, excelling at
it. æThe DrumÆ is quite a subdued track, giving vocalist Kim Benzie the perfect
vessel to prove his worth (If the rest of the album hadnÆt already done that for
you). æCageÆ also sees the band head in a new direction. While still a
straightforward song in terms of structure, it deviates from the traditional
Dead Letter Circus sound in that it is largely industrial based, particularly in
the chorus. This inclusion of new influences and instruments once again gives
the band room to experiment, giving rise to a brilliant song.

Staying true to their roots, there are a couple of songs that hark back to Dead
Letter CircusÆ early days. Fuelled by Rob Maric and his guitar delay, æThis Long
HourÆ is essentially æThe MileÆ on speed, featuring the best chorus that Dead
Letter Circus have written so far. While first single æThe Space on the WallÆ
sees the band in rock anthem mode, with Stewart HillÆs bass propelling the song.
Conversely, the title track and closer ditches the verse/chorus format all
together, giving drummer Luke Williams a chance to show off, pounding his toms
amidst BenzieÆs consistently astounding vocals. Williams also proves his worth
in æWalkÆ with the jangling guitars and huge vocal bridge providing the perfect
medium for him to experiment with his style, and doing so to perfection.

The only real negative is that a couple of the songs, namely æReactionÆ and
æNext In LineÆ are not completely new, having been around since early 2008.
Funnily enough, while they were probably considered some of Dead Letter CircusÆ
best songs prior to the albumÆs release, they are the two weakest tracks on the
album, if only for the fact that there is little deviation from the sound of
their debut EP. This however, should not be a deterrent, as they are both great
songs in their own right, they just lack the extra oomph and flesh that the rest
of the album has.

By including a huge range of new influences and sounds, Dead Letter Circus have
quashed fears that their sound was becoming stale and have instead created a
superb and diverse debut album. With This is the Warning under their belts it
shouldnÆt be long before everyone is on the DLC band wagon. You better jump on
quickly.
